Per Serving is a coalition of health, nutrition, and
consumer organizations dedicated to persuading food editors and writers
for newspapers, magazines, food websites, and cookbooks to analyze all the
recipes they publish and include complete and accurate "per serving
food facts" for each one. This includes original recipes, syndicated
recipes, recipes adapted from other sources, even recipes from readers.
We seek to accomplish this goal for a simple reason. Tens of millions of
Americans, young and old, suffer from life-threatening medical conditions
-- from obesity and diabetes to heart disease and cancer. And a key factor
in the management of their conditions, perhaps even their survival, is maintaining
a healthy diet. For many, foods or meals without the "per serving food
facts" are off limits. Millions more, who want to lead healthy lives,
will also benefit from having this nutritional information to help them
decide the appropriate foods to prepare and serve to their families.
Per Serving applauds the efforts of food editors who already include this
key nutritional information on the recipes they publish. Unfortunately,
some of Americas leading newspapers, magazines, food websites, and
cookbook publishers do not print or inconsistently print these
critical food facts.
Knowing the Per Serving food facts gives us all real choice, takes the guesswork out of eating and enables us to live a healthier life.
Its time for every publication to give their readers the information
they need and deserve. Per Serving intends to be the agent for such change.
